More than 20,000 gathered for a huge fireworks spectacular on the River Mersey.

It featured music, street entertainment and "pyrotechnic effects" steaming from the wings of aircraft, Liverpool City Council said.

The Bonfire Night event was held on the waterfront for the first time, replacing the city's traditional displays in Sefton and Newsham parks.

Crowds arrived and lined both sides of the Mersey.

However, some businesses in the Sefton Park area of Liverpool fear they will lose the benefit of what was one of their busiest nights of the year., external

One Lark Lane restaurant owner, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "On a business level and a personal level, I'm quite upset.

"It's a shame because all the businesses along Lark Lane are generally independent and I feel this has taken it away to the big corporate restaurants in town and not supporting the independent ones."

Liverpool's Director of Culture Claire McColgan says the authority has received backing from the private sector for the show on the waterfront, and has says it is display that "won't be seen anywhere else in the UK".
