A man who joined the RNLI in Wirral 40 years ago has received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year Honours list.

David Whiteley, 56, whose father gave 55 years to the service, led the campaign to raise £2m for the new Hoylake lifeboat station in 2007-2009.

Mr Whiteley has been coxswain for the last 15 years.

"Hoylake lifeboat has always been an important part of my life," he said.

He added: "It has been an honour in itself to serve the RNLI.

"The award also recognises the hard work and dedication of my crew, without them I would be nowhere."

Both his sons have served in the RNLI while his wife and daughter have been fundraisers.
