Thieves have stolen the ceremonial chain of the mayor of Meltham Town Council.
The "high value" chain was taken along with a number of other items when burglars struck at a property in the Meltham area overnight.
West Yorkshire said a silver BMW M3 was also stolen during the raid.
Det Con Victoria Catania said: "Clearly the chain has substantial emotional and historical significance for the council and the wider community in Meltham."
The chain was kept in a brown leather case embossed with the letters MUDC.
