Labour holds on to Southampton City Council majority

The Labour Party has held on to a slim majority on Southampton City Council.

The party still has 25 seats, ahead of the Conservatives' 19, with council leader Simon Letts saying he did not think leader Jeremy Corbyn was a big factor.

In Eastleigh, the Lib Dems held on to their 13 seats and remain in control of their only Hampshire council.

The Conservatives maintained majorities in Gosport, Fareham, Rushmoor, Havant and Basingstoke & Dean.

Mr Letts described Southampton as "a red dot in a sea of blue" and said the result was down to the "massive hard work" of party members.

Portsmouth City Council and Hart Borough Council both remain with no overall party in control, but with the Conservatives as the largest party.

Conservative leader of Portsmouth City Council, Donna Jones, said her minority administration would continue to work with UKIP and the Labour Party.

There are two independents in Southampton and two seats held by Councillors Against Cuts, giving Labour a majority of two.

Eastleigh Lib Dem leader Keith House said the party had seen "an absolutely fantastic set of results".

He added: "We've invested in our community, we're getting jobs into the area and we're tackling congestion."
