Lorry driver hijacked on A31 by armed gang

A lorry driver has been hijacked in Hampshire, threatened with a knife and forced to drive to Northamptonshire where his cargo was stolen.

Police said he was hijacked by several men on the A31 between Picket Post and junction one of the M27 at Cadnam.

The driver of the lorry was tricked into stopping in a lay-by by a woman flashing her lights on Monday evening.

He was forced to drive 130 miles (210km) and left tied up in the cab in a village near Junction 18 of the M1.

Police said a passer-by found the 36-year-old driver uninjured in the emptied white 40ft (12m) articulated lorry

Detectives have not said what the lorry had been carrying.

'Road rage'

The man who threatened the Hertfordshire-based lorry driver with a knife was described as at least 6ft (1.83m) tall, stocky, with short dark hair and wearing a boiler suit.

The woman who flagged him down was described as white and in her twenties, wearing black leggings and a dark top. She was driving a mid-blue saloon car.

Police did not release descriptions of the other men involved, who had been in a white vehicle which was also in the lay-by.

Det Insp Ellie Hurd said: "Passing motorists may have thought they were witnessing a road rage incident between the drivers of the lorry and the other vehicles in the lay-by.

"It would appear that this was simply a means to bring about the hijacking of the lorry.

"We also want to alert lorry drivers to this situation and warn them to be wary of any similar incidents.

"Our advice to them would be to stay in the cab with the doors locked."
