Southampton Shirley Towers death fire images released
Images of the aftermath of a flat fire in Southampton which claimed the lives of firefighters Alan Bannon and Jim Shears have been released for the first time.
The operation on the night of 6 April 2010 was controlled from an area on the seventh floor. Controllers kept track of firefighters on an "entry board".
Jim Shears and Alan Bannon lost their lives in the blaze at Shirley Towers. The inquest into their deaths has heard they became tangled in fallen cables.
The fire started in the lounge when a curtain placed in the bowl of an up-lighting lamp caught alight, the inquest jury has heard.
Two two-man teams of firefighters were sent into the flat. Red One, which survived, sought shelter in the bathroom after a sudden massive escalation in temperature, the inquest has heard.
The fire ripped through flat 72 on the ninth floor of the 15-storey block in Southampton.
Fire hoses were led from the front door up the first flight of stairs from where firefighters fought the flames.
