A pedestrian bridge in Carlisle is to remain closed for a number of weeks after structural engineers found it was suffering from serious corrosion.

It is thought the damage to the city's Millennium Bridge was caused by water getting into a joint and expanding as it froze during the winter.

Further investigations are due to be carried out before a timescale and the cost of repairs can be known.

Carlisle City Council has apologised for any inconvenience.

The bridge spans Castle Way, and pedestrians wishing to cross the busy road are advised to use the subways located next to Carlisle Castle or Bitts Park, near to Hardwick Circus.
