A non-league footballer is in critical care after crashing into another player on the pitch.

Rugby Town said defender Elliot Palmer, 21, had three broken ribs and bleeding on the kidney and liver after the match against local rivals, Bedworth United.

The player was involved in a collision with fellow teammate, goalkeeper Louis Connor, club official Tony Mann told the BBC.

The FA Trophy preliminary round game on Saturday ended in a 3-3 draw.

Mr Mann said: "The ball was running back to our keeper... who was rushing out.

"It was a 50/50 ball and one of their strikers was also going for it and Elliot collided with our keeper.

"It's upsetting... It just seemed a normal injury but a stretcher was brought and then an ambulance turned up with its lights on and you then realise the seriousness of it."
