Stillbirth families' charity in Cornwall raises £30k

A charity set up by a Cornwall couple in memory of their daughter who was stillborn has raised nearly £30,000 to refurbish a specialist hospital unit.

The Daisy suite at the Royal Cornwall Hospital is the only unit in the county catering for mothers who go through labour when their babies have died.

It was refurbished by Martyn and Emillie Selley from Truro in memory of their daughter Ella who died in 2009.

Mr Selley said the ward was "the nicest place that no one wants to stay in".

Family heartbreak

Speaking on BBC Radio Cornwall, he said their daughter died two weeks before she was due, just before Christmas 2009.

"I watched my wife's soul break in two," said Mr Selley, from Carnon Downs near Truro.

The couple set up their charity calling it Ella's Memory, and in nine months managed to raise £30,000 to refurbish the unit.

"It happens a lot," said Mr Selley. "The national statistics say six-and-a-half thousand every year.

"The Daisy suite is used two or three times a week, which is a lot."
