BBC Domesday Reloaded archive pictures from 1986
In 1986 the BBC asked people to contribute to a digital snapshot of Britain called the BBC Domesday Project. By the end of the project a million people had taken part. This picture of pupils on their BMX bikes was one of the images taken for the project. (Update this picture at bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-424000-273000)
For the purposes of the project Britain was divided into 3x4 km blocks, with people adding information to the archive in their selected area. This image from the Isle of Man was taken by headmaster Mr K.J. Quane of Andreas School. (Update this picture at bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-238000-497000)
The scale and ambition of this "people-powered" portrait of the country was unprecedented. This picture of young people in Harrow is one of 25,000 images supplied. (Update this picture at bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-512000-186000)
Some of the images supplied in 1986 were of landscapes and street views like this colourful picture of Crayke Village in North Yorkshire. (Update this picture at bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-456000-468000)
25 years on, the BBC has released around 25,000 photos of British life and landscapes along with approximately 150,000 pages of accompanying text. This picture of Mrs.Sturgeon in a fancy dress shop is one of the images in the archive. (Update this picture at bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-552000-114000)
BBC Domesday Reloaded would like to invite you to explore the images and articles from the original project and find out how life in Britain has changed today, like this picture of Coventry Canal which was taken in 1986 and re-taken in 2011. (Update this picture at bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-432000-282000)
We would also like to know if things have stayed the same, like the egg and spoon race that these young people are competing in. (Update this picture at bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-424000-465000)
If you would like to contribute to the project and tell us of the changes across Britain over the last 25 years, or if you recognise yourself in these pictures, then visit the BBC Domesday Reloaded website at bbc.co.uk/domesday.
