Inside the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit
BBC Radio 5 live has been given exclusive access to the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.
Like most public bodies it is dealing with cuts and will find out next month just what its post-spending review budget will be.
Officers are trying to rebuild trust with sections of the public. The force has recently dismantled a 200-strong CCTV camera network targeted at Muslim suburbs of Birmingham as part of a secret counter-terrorism initiative.
Police had misled residents telling them the cameras were there to combat vehicle crime and antisocial behaviour.
Reporter Phil Mackie was given a unique insight into the way counter terrorism officers operate. DCI Alex Murray gave him a tour of the headquarters.
You can listen again to the full Breakfast special from Birmingham central police station on the BBC Radio 5 live website.
