Former contestant Brian Dowling presents Big Brother on Channel 5

The 13th series of Big Brother will begin on 5 June at 9pm, Channel 5 has confirmed.

Previous winner Brian Dowling is back as host, while a celebrity version of the show will follow at the end of the series.

The show will launch with a special extended episode.

Big Brother moved to Channel 5 in 2011 and has been a ratings success with the celebrity version regularly attracting more than two million viewers.

The non-celebrity format hasn't been quite as popular and some shows have dipped below one million for the first time.

Despite that, Channel 5 recently signed a new two-year deal with production company Endemol, which makes the programme.

It means the show will stay on British TV screens until 2014.

Big Brother first aired on Channel 4 in 2000 but the channel dropped the programme because of falling ratings.

The last Big Brother was broadcast in January with Loose Women's Denise Welch winning the celebrity face-off.

X Factor contestant Frankie Cocozza came second.
