Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrat party has lost hundreds of council seats

The Liberal Democrats have lost hundreds of council seats in local elections across England.

Nick Clegg's party lost control of councils in Hull, Bristol in Stockport as well as suffering terrible results in Liverpool and Manchester.

He says his party is being "blamed" for the coalition's spending cuts.

Labour has also taken control of Sheffield City Council, winning nine Lib Dem seats.

Newsbeat has been speaking to people in Sheffield, where Nick Clegg is an MP.

"I voted for the Lib Dems last time. They said they wouldn't put tuition fees up and ended up doing it.

"I just don't believe them any more. My little sister will be in the first year of higher fees and I just don't think its fair.

"The people in power now got tuition for free and we're having to pay the consequences."

Luke Parker, 19, student, didn't vote

"It's good that the Lib Dems have done badly because they didn't deserve it.

"I think a lot of people have been put off by that. Labour have done well because they've got a new party leader.

"I don't trust any of them - they all go back on their word."

(Tom voted for the Conservatives)

"I wouldn't normally vote Tory, but he said he'd sort out the roads which are really bad round here. That was a big plus for me.

"If Nick Clegg is going to break his promises then he's not going to get votes."

(Alex voted for the Lib Dems)

"I've lost confidence in them overall, but I think locally they're better than Labour or the Conservatives.

"I've lost quite a bit of confidence in Nick Clegg too, but I think he has been made a scapegoat for the Tories."

Lizzie Jewell, 18, student

"I don't want a Tory government and the Lib Dems have let us down loads.

"In the last election I would have voted Lib Dem and I would have been really disappointed with it.

"Nick Clegg said he wouldn't support higher fees and then changed his mind.

"It was an issue which he said was very important to him, so I felt let down."
