  2. New guidelines for dealing with disruptive pupilspublished at 14:40 BST 20 September 2018

    BBC Radio Jersey

Jersey's schools are to be sent new guidelines for dealing with disruptive pupils.

It comes after new figures revealed across the island's seven secondary schools, almost 1,200 days were lost due to temporary exclusions during the last academic year.

The government's children's department said it has spent money training school staff to have the skills and confidence to support positive behaviour and respond to challenges when they need to.

It added no pupils were permanently excluded last year, and it's confident the new guidelines will help reduce the number of children told to temporarily stay away from class.

  4. States to pay UK firm £3.5m to transform governmentpublished at 13:58 BST 20 September 2018

    BBC Radio Jersey

Jersey States will pay a UK company £3.5m to help transform the way the government works for islanders.

Jersey's top civil servant, Charlie Parker, is hoping to streamline the way the States works and has announced a deal with a company called TDP Development, which is based in Halifax in Yorkshire.

The company will work with a group of ministers and States employees to draw up plans aimed at improving teamwork, collaboration and leadership, before they are rolled out to all the island's 7,500 public sector staff.

TDP Development - which beat 23 other companies in a tender process - has committed to creating a Jersey-based company - which will employ local people - to deliver the project.

The Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondre, said the project will transform the culture of the public sector, so Jersey can "meet the challenges posed by Brexit, globalisation and a fast-changing technological landscape".

    BBC Radio Jersey

Jersey could face strikes this autumn by teachers and nurses if union members agree.

The results of a ballot on whether nurses should strike over their recent pay deal are expected to be revealed next Wednesday.

    Jersey General Hospital

They've described their offer as an insulting re-hash of one they have already rejected.

Now teachers are also being balloted about whether they should strike - after union leaders described their latest offer as "a con trick".

A spokesman for the States of Jersey said the teachers' action was disappointing and the pay offer was designed to tackle equal pay issues and raise the incomes of the lowest paid staff members.

    BBC Radio Jersey

CCTV could be erected around a vandalised lighthouse at Sorel in Jersey, after all the glass windows were smashed.

The lighthouse has been vandalised twice in recent weeks. On the second occasion, it was taken out of service because the red glass filter which warns mariners couldn't be used.

Jamie Dollimore, from Ports of Jersey, said it could be out of service for up to two weeks because the glass is difficult to find.

He said they were looking at a number of options to prevent further damage including CCTV.

The red filters are not in stock locally. It can take one to two weeks. There is a cost to replace the glazing and the time for personnel to go up there.

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

The liquidators of an estate agent which collapsed last month say there are "sufficient" deposits to repay landlords.

When Sarnia Estate Agency Limited went into liquidation on 28 August, many tenants and landlords were concerned that they would not get their deposits back.

    Sarnia Estate Agents

Liquidators, Grant Thornton, intend to give some funds back to landlords on 1 November, but only to those who have submitted proof of their claim.

Any claim submitted after 15 October "may not be accepted".

  9. Guernsey should follow Southampton in airport planspublished at 08:06 BST 20 September 2018

    BBC Channel Islands News

Guernsey should follow Southampton Airport's example and make it possible to operate to countries all over Europe, according to Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher.

He made the comments after Southampton announced the start of a public consultation, to look at plans to extend their runway and upgrade their terminal.

Deputy Kuttelwascher says Guernsey should look to follow suit, including extending the runway.

    Deputy Jan Kuttlewascher
    Quote Message

What's interesting is they want to extend their marketing sweep across various destinations and Guernsey should look to do the same. Flying direct saves you the cost of going to Gatwick or anywhere else. There would be demand.

  10. More than 13,000 sign organ donor registerpublished at 07:46 BST 20 September 2018

There was an event in the first week of September to encourage people to register, including banners at the Jersey General Hospital.

Earlier this year, Jersey's politicians agreed an opt-out organ donation system will be introduced in the island.

It will mean that if people don't want to donate their organs after death, they will have to say so, rather than the current system where they have to say if they want to donate.

There is no set date for the introduction of the opt-out system yet but it will likely follow the same system already introduced in Wales.

  11. Guernsey in 'detailed discussions' over Alderney wastepublished at 07:23 BST 20 September 2018

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

The States of Guernsey has been in "detailed discussions" with Alderney over how to handle the island's waste.

    Alderney

The States of Jersey has also shown an interest in processing Alderney's waste.

Jersey's Infrastructure Minister Kevin Lewis said they could earn £90,000 and generate enough power at the island's energy from waste plant for more than 100 homes.

However, Richard Evans from the States of Guernsey, said there were still some barriers for Jersey to get over before they could provide the service.

    Quote Message

Ultimately, where the States of Alderney send their waste is a matter for them. Jersey acknowledge they still require political approval before they can import any waste, which does highlight a significant issue that existed when they tendered to receive our waste, and which has not yet been resolved.

Richard Evans, Deputy Managing Director, States Trading Assets
