Separately to the protests at universities, Yaqoob Mohammadi, an outspoken Iranian academic and activist, was arrested at his home in Abdanan, Iran, by security forces on Saturday. He has previously been held as a political prisoner by authorities.

We verified two videos showing Mohammadi led through his garden to the street by masked men. In the street we people fighting with armed men who leave in a pair of cars. Shadows visible from nearby telegraph poles show this was roughly 2.30pm local time on Saturday.

At around 4pm a video showed about 50 men walking from the direction of Mohammadi’s home, turning south to head into the centre of town. A watermark on the video claimed this was in protest over his arrest.

An hour or so later dozens of men were seen running across another road while gunshots could be heard.

By sunset, about 10 people in riot uniform and an armoured vehicle, were filmed at Valiasr Square, a major roundabout in the city where protests also occurred last week. By nightfall, around 50 people were seen waiting outside Mohammadi’s home.

Mohammadi was released on Sunday. That morning he was filmed near his home as a crowd cheered. He thanked them for “standing up for him”.

Anti-government protests broke out at universities in Iran this weekend, just weeks after the deadly crackdown carried out by authorities left thousands dead.

We’ve verified videos of protests at five universities in Tehran, including clashes between pro and anti-establishment crowds, anti-government protesters shouting pro-monarchy chants, pro-government protesters setting alight US and Israel flags, and people waving the pre-revolution flag showing the lion and sun on campuses.

The team is also verifying material from Mexico this morning where a wave of violence has broken out following the killing of "El Mencho", a major cartel leader, during an operation seeking his arrest. Retalliation over his death has spread across a number of states and we’re examining footage apparently showing the aftermath of soldiers being shot, businesses left torched and widespread roadblocks set up by cartel members.

Plus, we’re looking into the background of the armed man who was shot and killed by the Secret Service after breaching the secure perimeter of US President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, and debunking claims that the President called into C-SPAN under the name “John Barron”.
