Life in Pictures: Davy Jones
Davy Jones, lead singer of the 1960s pop band the Monkees, was born in Manchester, England on 30 December 1945.
The four members of the Monkees were selected in 1966 to form both a "Beatles-like" band and be featured on their own TV series. The band released nine albums in four years and their TV show ran for two years.
Jones, a teenage actor, appeared in a West End production of Oliver! as the Artful Dodger. The Monkees was a comical and often absurd look at the life of four aspiring young musicians.
The group had several international hits, including I'm a Believer and Last Train to Clarksville.
Jones left the band in 1971, attempted a solo career and continued to act.
The band reunited several times, including for the 1996 album and tour Justus.
Jones, who is survived by his wife and four daughters, died of a heart attack on 29 February 2012 in Florida. He was 66.
