In Pictures: Stirling prize shortlist 2010
The shortlist for the Stirling Prize for architecture has been announced. Among the nominees is Oxford's Ashmolean museum. A £61m refit, opened last year, left Charles Cockerell's 1845, Grade I listed building intact while doubling the exhibition space.
A freestanding addition to Clapham Manor Primary School's original 19th Century building is the most colourful nominee. Judges said it provided "an inventive and uplifting example of what the next generation of school buildings could be".
Bateman's Row in Shoreditch, east London, is a development mixing home and office space, a studio and gallery and four apartments. Judges said it was executed with "extraordinary care and judgment".
The National Museum of XXI Century Arts, or Maxxi, in Rome, was designed by Iraqi-born, London-based Zaha Hadid. The 150m euro (£126m) building is described as "a place of paths and routes".
The Neues Museum ("New Museum") in Berlin, Germany houses Egyptian and early archaeological collections. It was repaired and restored by British architect David Chipperfield, alleviating the effects of war damage.
This £14.4m extension to Christ's College School in Guildford was praised for being "light, well-laid-out and well-equipped", creating an environment "in which all students can flourish". The winner of the Stirling Prize will be announced on 2 October.
