In pictures: Queen's Birthday Honours
Actress Sophie Okonedo, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Hotel Rwanda, has been appointed an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
Popular poet Simon Armitage, who lives in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, has been appointed a CBE for services to literature.
Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones is among the famous faces from the world of stage and screen to be honoured. The Swansea-born actress receives a CBE.
Musician John Cale, co-founder of rock band the Velvet Underground, becomes an OBE. He left the band in 1968 and has since embarked on a solo career.
Barbara Knox, Anne Reid and Eileen Derbyshire are all appointed MBEs. Derbyshire has played Emily Bishop since 1961, while Knox is best known as Rita Sullivan. Reid's character Valerie Barlow was killed off in 1971.
Graham Nash (left) of folk-rock supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash is appointed OBE in the overseas and diplomatic list. The Blackpool-born and Salford-raised musician was also a member of The Hollies and became a US citizen in 1978.
South African-born Ronald Harwood is knighted for services to drama. His script for The Pianist won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay, and he received a further nomination for French film The Diving Bell and The Butterfly.
John Nettles, star of Bergerac and Midsomer Murders, is honoured with an OBE. His final appearance in the ITV crime serial is due to be screened next year.
Horror writer James Herbert, whose chilling works inclue The Rats, is honoured with an OBE for services to literature.
