05.08.08Stars compete to lead orchestra
The students will spend the summer training in the art of conducting, with one participant to bevoted off each week by a panel of judges led by top conductor Sir Roger Norrington.
The winner will then perform in front of 30,000 people at BBC Proms in the Park, which takes place in Hyde Park on 13 September to mark the end of the Proms.
The celebrities include newsreader Katie Derham, broadcaster Peter Snow, hiphop star Goldie, Blur bassist Alex James, actress Jane Asher, actor David Soul and comedians Sue Perkins and Bradley Walsh.
Training begins with a week-long Baton Camp, where each participant will each be assigned their own mentor, with whom they will work intensively to master the disciplines of orchestral, choral and operatic music.
Rehearsals continue throughout the summer and each celebrity will take to the conductor's podium in August. They will conduct the BBC Concert Orchestra in front of a studio audience and an international judging panel, in a weekly BBC2 show presented by Clive Anderson.
The head of BBC Classical Music Television Peter Maniura said: "Maestro will take the audience on a fascinating, surprising, thrilling and informative journey into the heart of music-making. It will delve into the practicalities, magic and mystery of what a conductor actually does to make great music happen."
