21.08.08Lessons learned, by David Soul
The night after Maestro Episode 2, rejected student David Soul told BBC Radio 4's Front Row programme what he had learned from the experience.
"Normally most reality TV I would bin. But I accepted this invitation because I thought the show would be a step higher than that and because I am fascinated by classical music, which I don't know much about, and I thought I'd learn something. Plus, the mandate of the show was to expose a larger audience to classical music, which I thought was a great goal. What I gained from the show was the realisation, how incredible the composers are. It was great getting to grips with my pieces. I'm hoping the show continues on this higher plane, because reality shows often succumb to just being entertainment.
"Conducting I found is a two-way street - you don't want to conduct like it's your CD at home. You want to lead, and at the same time you want to listen. Once the communication is there with the players, a conductor can make a lot of difference with the orchestra in terms of sound, dynamics, tempo, emphasis - put a score down in front of a musician, it has to be interpreted as well."
