The 20th Anniversary of Live Aid

Phil Collins looks back on the events of 13 July 1985, when Britain and the USA hosted the biggest live rock event ever.

As part of the BBC's Africa Lives season and in the run-up to the Live 8 concerts in July, this special documentary features interviews and music from many of the artists who contributed on that legendary day.

Live Aid featured 16 hours of live music, televised around the world and featured some of the greatest artists of all time. Concerts in London and Philadelphia formed the central focus for a 'global jukebox'. Bob Geldof and his team originally hoped to raise £1m on the day, but the final total was over £110m.

In the programme Bob Geldof explains how the project was put together in just 10 weeks and recounts the enormous persuasion needed to bring together the world's biggest rock stars.

Promoter Harvey Goldsmith talks about some of the logistical and technical problems, while stars including Bono, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Sting, Roger Taylor, Brian May, Bryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Tony Hadley, Simon LeBon and Mark Knopfler explain what it was like to play for the world's biggest audience. Also, Phil Collins explains how he came to fly in Concorde across the Atlantic to play at both the London and Philadelphia concerts on the same day.
