NEWS: 'Africa Calling' event launched

Youssou N'Dour

From Radio 1's Newsbeat

15 June 2005

Midge Ure, Youssou N'Dour and Peter Gabriel have announced plans for a Live 8 gig featuring African artists at the Eden Project in Cornwall on 2 July. It's to be called 'Africa Calling'.

The huge event at London's Hyde Park has been criticised for a lack of black artists. Peter says this should balance things out:

"Well I hope in some ways it's still serving the same goal and it is in part a response, I think we would have done it differently."

"Bob's criteria is that he is trying to reach billions of people around the world."

"If there are unknown artists, whether they come from Africa, England, America, people will switch off."

'Africa Calling' will be hosted by Peter Gabriel, artists performing on the night include West African vocalist and songwriter Angelique Kidjo, Somalia's female vocalist Maryam Mursal, and Salif Keita.

Also appearing will be:
Thomas Mapfumo and Blacks Unlimited
Tinariwen
Daara J
Akim El Sikameya
Shikisha
Ayub Ogada
Modou Diouf & O Fogum
