NEWS: Midge promises memorable music mix

Midge Ure

From Radio 1's Newsbeat

14 June 2005

Live 8 organiser Midge Ure is promising an unforgettable music experience at the Edinburgh gig he's organising on 6 July.

Midge is getting together the artists who will be performing at the Murrayfield stadium show to coincide with the start of the G8 summit, four days after five other Live 8 concerts around the world.

He's told the BBC that gig-goers can expect a unique experience:

"I promise that you will see something that you will never, ever see again. You'll see collaborations and combinations of people, the list is endless."

"My phone is going off the hook with people offering their services and asking ‘Can I come and do backing vocals, can I come and plug in an amplifier?'."

Midge was quick to scotch rumours that Will Smith, George Clooney, Brad Pitt would be making an appearance at the gig:

"Well I've heard George Clooney singing and he's not bad. It would be nice to get George Clooney and Ewan McGregor together. That would be a fantastic duet."

"But I'm not sure if any of that is actually true. People get a little imaginative and speculate somewhat. I am not going to give you any names. Some of the names that are flying about, yes they will be there. Some of them, I'm really not sure."

The Ultravox star joined Bob Geldof in condemning the sale of tickets on eBay. His advice for anyone tempted to buy from real or cyber touts is to just stay at home instead:

"I wouldn't line somebody else's pocket who is completely and utterly morally wrong just in order to see the concert. I would sit back and listen to it on the radio or watch it on the TV."
