With a whiskey and nicotine soaked growl of a voice, a five piece band and a bunch of songs that sound like they were uncovered in an attic where they'd been lying there since 1959 waiting for Johnny Cash or Nick Cave to cover them, Jamie N. Commons makes it hard to believe that he's only 22.

It's also hard to believe he's not an American - he was born in Bristol (though he did spend his formative years in Chicago, which must count for something). Old Testament themes of retribution, violence and death run through his debut EP The Baron which came out in October 2011, attracting the attention of critics (particularly Q Magazine) and gaining a high profile fan in the form of Elvis Costello.

A debut album is scheduled for 2012, and it wouldn't be a surprise if 2032 saw Rick Rubin producing a Commons album of Robert Johnson tunes.
