Italian trumpeter hooks up with legendary US drummer Paul Motian and longtime pianist...
Lara Bellini2004
Rava's latest release for ECM is an inspired and lyrical homage to French filmmaker Jacques Tati. The Italian trumpeter again relies on Stefano Bollani's enthused pianism, and this time employs Paul Motian's attentive, atmospheric and deeply intense drumming.
The musicians all contribute to the writing (apart from the occasional steering away: Gerswin's "The Man I love" and Puccini's "E Lucevan Le Stelle" from Tosca). The trio play withrange, but mainly choose lyrical landscapes: echoes and silences intensely performed, every note matters, every pause is meaningful. As always, less is more. Rava's predilection for those pretty notes makes up for his intensely evocative minimalism. A Jewel.
