I have to admit that the combination of fusion drummer Jason Smith and Gary Husband on keys (instead of drums) didn't exactly fill me with excitement. Despite that, there is a lot to like about this album. Smith's writing is strong in a "Michael Brecker, Tales from the Hudson" kind of way and the playing is slick.

As Smith treads the difficult path between fusion and a straightahead piano trio sound, he often feels like he's trying to do too much. Maybe it's because it's a trio of session players; there's not a great sense that this band have a vision, which is a shame - it is almost a very good album.

This is a vibrant, confident record, but if Smith wants hismusicto stand out from that of the current crop of piano trios, he needs to be sure of his own voice.
