Hints and tips: Playing the Oboe
If you haven't played your oboe for some time, here are a few things you’ll need to bear in mind.
Make sure you have some good reeds. It’s probably best to start with ready-made reeds at first – and don’t forget they need to be moistened first.
When you assemble your oboe remember to hold each part very carefully to avoid damaging the keys - the reed fits into the top joint and should be put in last.
You probably won’t make a great sound to begin with because you’ll need to develop your embouchure again (how you hold it in your mouth).
To make the embouchure, roll your bottom lip over your bottom teeth and your top lip over your top teeth – then place the reed between your lips and blow. Remember the embouchure needs to be really tight.
Don’t make yourself dizzy with too much blowing at first, as you’ll also need to develop your breath control again. Practice in short sessions.
There are lots of keys on the oboe, so you might need to remind yourself where your fingers should go with a basic fingering chart.
If all that blowing leads to condensation building up within the oboe so remember to have a pull-through to dry it out after each session.
