Hints and Tips: Playing the Cello
Before tuning your cello tighten the bow and put some rosin on it.
Tune the open strings to C – G – D – A – the lowest note being the C two octaves below middle C (so all the notes are below middle C on the piano)
If your cello hasn’t been played for a while the tuning pegs might be stiff so be careful when tuning as broken strings can be dangerous, especially for your eyes.
Start with some warm-up exercises such as long bows, scales and arpeggios. Don’t over do it though – you can easily strain your muscles and tendons by overstretching.
If you want to concentrate on your bowing, keep the notes simple.
You’ll probably get sore fingertips on your left hand to begin with from pressing the strings down – the skin will harden with regular practice however.
If you’re worried about noise, try using a normal mute or practice mute.
Wipe the strings after practising as the oil from your fingertips can be corrosive.
If you’re looking for lessons you’ll find many instrumental teachers advertise in local shops and libraries, while local authority Music Services are also a good place to start.
