Review: Peter Kay @ the Lowry
Peter Kay
'Ave it! Peter Kay
I can think of worse ways to go.

But not since 'Tufty' Nash held me underwater during swimming at school, have I been so close to asphyxiation.

You think I'm joking. I thought later: ‘It's not right. A joke about dunking Hob Nobs should not be life-threatening’ (For the biscuit, maybe). But this is Peter Kay.

Bolton most famous son blew the lid off his 12 night run at the Lowry on Monday (Dec 2) with a first night performance which at times pushed his audience close to respiratory collapse. A woman who slipped and broke her arm outside was taken away by ambulance. It should have hung around.

For those of us reared on a diet of Rola Cola, Jim’ll Fix It, space hoppers, Bullseye, the Ferguson Videostar and sherbert fountains, Peter Kay is simply the funniest man on the planet. Why? I don’t know.

The thing is, you know what you’re getting before he comes on. Observational comedy from a roly poly Northern comic with catchphrases like ‘Ave it!’ and telling gags about penny chews and Seventies' TV shows like Love Boat and Tenko.

It's not like he's got loads of great new material. He's been doing the same stuff for years. And he’s still sliding on his knees 'like young lads do at weddings'. (This time he split his kecks on stage. Accident or great comic timing? Who knows?)

With Bolton still a few miles up the M61, Salford Quays wasn’t quite a homecoming, but he made it feel like one. "Hey! I can see me house from the roof," he began. "I could’ve come on t’bus."

And on he went, bouncing like a space hopper, through a decade of childhood Sunday afternoons, visiting his Gran, Connie’s funeral, and 'our Sandra’s wedding' until his final helium-fuelled rendition of Danny Boy.

Peter Kay is the hottest thing in stand-up right now. Twelve nights at the Lowry sold out in seconds, and tickets are going for a hundred quid apiece on Loot. You wonder how he’ll keep it up.

"Tomorrow, it’ll be like Groundhog Day," he said. He splits his kecks
, I choke to death again - now that's proper funny.

From Selina in Birmingham
I went to see Peter Kay in Birmingham last night(9th June) and he was hilarious! My cheeks are still sore from the endless laughing. One of my favourite bits was about wedding's; DJ'S, Uncle Knodhead, Dad's dancing... Pure class!!

From Glynn in Chorley
I thought it couldnt get better than the Blackpool Video I was wrong! Very Wrong! Peter was a true comic for 2 hours at Preston! Very brilliant only wish he would do CHORLEY where I live!

From Barry in Liverpool
i love comedy but this man is a genius. from the moment you are in your seat listening to the catchphrases coming over the loud speaker until the moment you are driving home you are doing your best not to wet yourself. everything that he talks about is spot on and yet so funny. i think its the realisation that we have all been there. i dont think it needs analysing, its just simple, funny and delivered with perfection.

From Catherine, Manchester
Peter Kay was absolutely fantastic. I loved the performance at the Apollo in Manchester especially the story of the "buzzing" cinema screen. I would happily sit through this show several times (if only tickets were available). Hurry up with the next video.

From Sam Ellis in Manchester
I laughed til I cried, Peter Kay is hilarious. We saw him in Blackpool, he came on to raptrous applause & even got a bloke out of the auddience to experiance it! From the minuite he started to the minutie he finished myself & my husband were looking at each other nodding & agreeing that his childhood was just like ours. He never fails the bit with the rich tea & hobnobs was spot on, as was Lionel Richie's Hello! My husband says I am obsessed with Peter Kay, now he knows why!

From Janet Clarke in Ashton-Under-Lyne
