But his depiction as Christ in a controversial painting has raised eyebrows in religious circles. Are they right? Or is the point of art? Artist Michael Browne is a keen Manchester United fan. His latest work is based on Raphael's The Transfiguration and features one of his all time heroes. ![]() The Resurrection of Eric Cantona? In Michael's version, the figure of Christ has been replaced with that of United legend George Best. His painting also shows two Page Three models as the women at his feet and two local homeless men as prophets. Michael insists the painting is all about temptation and leaving behind earthly desires, the footballer being well known for his love of the high life. But he denies that he sees George Best as a Messiah figure. "George Best had his own human problems in life but he is ascending in his way to another existence – that’s my image of him as a spiritual being, as an ascension, and he is leaving behind his Earthly delights with these two women." "It's drawing a parallel to the lifestyle. If a person wants to look at it as an offence, they're going to say: 'you're trying to say he's God, he's Jesus'. But I'm not saying that. I'm saying this is an event in a man's life." It's not the first time Michael has cast a United player in a biblical setting. His 1997 painting, The Art of The Game featuring Eric Cantona, was based on Piero della Francesca's Resurrection of Christ. last updated: 13/11/2008 at 11:09 Have Your SayWhat do you think of Michael Browne's painting?
