The Beep Seals at Ruby Lounge

Festive amplifiers dressed in tinsel, Santa hats, mince pies, crackers and a raffle. For a moment, it seemed like Brian Potter was hosting an annual Christmas fund raiser at The Phoenix Club in Bolton… But no, it’s a Beep Seals Xmas shindig.

On stage, there was more of a summery air, as the post modern 60s harmonies worked really well, flowing seamlessly in and out of falsetto very accurately. The results sound very delicate and intimate, a reminder of post-Syd early Floyd and The Beach Boys, but there was something else.

They were rockin’ a little more than the LSD-inspired compositions of Pink Floyd and with heavy hooks that would simply scare Brian Wilson; it seems theirs is a new take on the genre. Or is it?

There’s no doubt the Beep Seals have mastered the art of the catchy melody, whether it be sung or played by an instrument, and their solo sections were pre-determined, not spontaneous, but done really well, giving another catchy hook for the audience to grasp onto.

This combination may seem fresh because of the current dull radio sound but Jellyfish have already done it. That’s not too say there isn’t any room for any other bands of this style or that The Beeps are second to Jellyfish; it’s just to point out that music doesn’t seem to be moving forward in any real noticeable ways and that people don’t seem to mind.

Good as their songs are, none stick in your head or stand out and shout at you, making you think “wow that was a little risky, a little different”. In fact, the only thing that was tonight was the raffle.

I liked it, I love that kind of music, and there is no doubt that this band have a future, but there are avenues that are yet to be explored.
