Kate Rusby

Kate Rusby at the Lowry

In today’s climate of over-hyped and over-indulged indie bands, Kate Rusby and her familiar band of merry men are a palatable breath of fresh air.

With new album Awkward Annie released last month and doing well plus accordion player Andy Cutting's recent status change to New Dad, there is a definite feel of revitalisation that gently lifts tonight’s performance above and beyond anything average.

The new songs - particularly Bitter Boy and closer Planets - must exist on an entirely personal level for Rusby when you consider that the new disk is the first since she split with John McCusker a few years ago (he didn't produce the album as a result, but still tours with the band) and they are deeply transformed in a live context.

That, though, is the joy of a Kate Rusby concert - the albums are good, but can do justice to neither the lush, organic sound of her ensemble or the sheer gravity of her angelic voice.

When both these elements come together in harmony - particularly on Bring Me A Boat and Blooming Heather - the results will quite literally take your breath away.

Factor in the band’s well-practiced audience charm/banter technique and the relaxed and intimate setting of the Lowry's Lyric Theatre, and you have all the ingredients for an evening that is truly unforgettable.
