Their debut, Fractured Life, leans towards Coldplay and Snow Patrol in style, yet many of their piano-led songs also have unique twists that make them really refreshing. Big songs are very much the order of the day. They open with Get In Line, which gets the crowd rocking, and singles Charlotte and Just Abuse Me equally don’t disappoint – when the lead singer Chris Wall breaks into the Charlotte riff, the crowd go crazy. It’s clearly a favourite. For their new single, No More Running Away, guitarist Tom Pritchard and bassist Jim Maddock each play drums either side of the stage, before passing on their rhythmic theme to drummer David Ryan Jordan, who throws it around between various drums for the middle-8. The whole crowd clap along at what is a great, infectious spectacle and there’s obvious enthusiasm from the band too at this brilliant musical twist in the set. The crowd were also treated to a few new songs across the night, and every one went down a treat – it’s a great sign of things to come. They end the night on Shooting Star – a soaring and melodious track and a great end to the night. Opening with just piano and vocals, the song gradually builds up to an explosive finish that, by the end, had the whole crowd jumping. It also demonstrates perfectly Chris Wall’s fantastic vocal range – it’s a voice that puts the likes of Ricky Wilson and Chris Martin to shame; not to mention his piano solos in several songs that are worthy of praise even from accomplished pianists. This is a band with an understated manner to their performance, but nothing understated about the quality of their music. A fantastic gig, and I hope these guys go far. last updated: 19/09/07 You are in: Manchester > Entertainment > Music > Reviews > Air Traffic at Academy 3 How was it for you?
