The Answering Machine

The Answering Machine at Night and Day

With the release of the excellent Silent Hotels, their national tour and basking in the glow of a storming Dpercussion set, The Answering Machine took to the brain-swelteringly hot stage with heavy expectation weighing on their waif-like shoulders.

Not that they let it betray their cool indie exterior. From the moment they arrived, breezy guitar pop of the highest calibre came flooding out, drowning the audience in tight, jangly riffs, exquisite harmonies and all-round Mancunian coolness.

Sounding like the young poppy offspring of The Strokes and Dirty Pretty Things, they whizzed through songs like Oh Christina! and crowd favourite Oklahoma in no time at all. Sounding tight and vibrant, they looked thoroughly at home, which, as they come from just down the road, they were.

On stage they are an awesome mixture of retro-chic and devil-may-care, and the sense of fun is further extended by the playful banter of lead singer Martin and guitarist Patrick, who paw at each other like playful lion cubs throughout the set.

Bassist and indie-chick du jour Gemma looked on with a wry smile and continued to pump through the kind of bass lines that make you want to throw the smoothest of shapes.

Watching them confidently play tunes that already sound like hit singles, especially their new single Light Bulbs, one can only hope that the rest of the country starts to catch on to this brilliant outfit, especially in time for next summer, as their indie-pop goodness is perfect for those lazy days and playful nights.

At last, here is a Manchester band to really get excited about.
