The latter is a curse and a blessing, and something that they could do with distancing themselves from. Well, whatever. The truth is they are a bit special and that’s down the Reverend himself, Jon McClure, not least because he doesn’t keep his opinions to himself. Tonight, he wanted us to have a good time "not like those other bands who just want your money." Has he anybody specific in mind; is there trouble in Sheffield’s paradise? It’s not just the patter though. McClure spends his songs wandering around with that recognisable indie swagger (a la Liam Gallagher) and his intense staring is part of a great stage persona. He treads the fine line between confidence and arrogance perfectly. He’s as happy telling a fan he's "too cool for your beer can" as he is chucking in his short sermons of objectionable poetry. Tonight, though, he mostly wanted us to have a good time. And that we did. Yes, this is not ground breaking stuff and some of the songs sound strangely similar to each other, but they’re good songs. It’s a sound that works. It was short but sweet and topped off with a great performance of Heavyweight Champion Of The World, which the crowd had been waiting for. At this rate, they might just free themselves of those Monkeys links. last updated: 30/07/07 You are in: Manchester > Entertainment > Music > Reviews > Reverend and The Makers at Academy 2 [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive] |
