City fan in blue wig
True Blue: defies reason

City 'til I Die?

A new exhibition at Urbis is hoping to reveal what it means to be 'City 'til I Die.' On display are fans' photos showing their true Blue loyalty despite the club's lack of success. Are you CTID? Tell us what it means:

City 'til I Die exhibition

Start Date:18/04/2007
End Date:31/08/2007
Genres:Museums and Exhibitions
Venue Name:Urbis
Venue Town:Manchester

It's not easy being a City fan. Their more illustrious and successful rivals cast a long red shadow not just across Manchester, but across the entire Planet Football.

But there's a dedication beyond reason among the Blue faithful which United would give Rooney's right leg to have. It's the unswerving commitment and optimism of City fans that underpins this new exhibition of fans' photos at Urbis this summer.

After appeals in the club's matchday programme and on fan sites, Urbis received hundreds of pictures ranging from a baby's first club kit to a whole village of City fans in Sierra Leone.

Collectively, they capture the true spirit and emotions of life as a ‘true Blue’ and document some key milestones in the club’s history, such as the last game played at Maine Road and the first at Eastlands.

True Blue

Ruth Ibegbuna, Head of Learning at Urbis explains that the inspiration for the exhibition came when the sister of a friend, Helen Summerfield, died last year.

"Helen was a life-long City fan and this is why the exhibition focuses on the fans rather than the players, because there are some incredibly moving stories revolving around the club that never get told but are inextricably linked to what happens on the pitch.

"Quite simply without the fans there would be no club, they are the unsung football heroes and there chance to shine."

Loyalty beyond logic

Supporting Manchester City is something that is in your blood and is passed down through the generations from father to son. It's not about glory or trophies but is about loyalty and passion and following your club through thick and thin. It's the hope that one day we will be great again and all the pain and misery we've endured will make that moment even more special.
