Omerta at Night and Day

Michelle Hussey (gig: 23/03/07)
Omerta have been quiet for a few months since their last single, One More Minute, reached number 20 in the UK Indie Singles Chart and their last Mancunian gig, at the Bier Keller, ended in a triumphant and hedonistic stage invasion.

They came on tonight to a rousing reception from a large group of regular fans, and a fair few new ones too by the looks of it.

Omerta are known and loved for the electricity and energy that they convey – their songs are powerful and command attention, and their presence is unmistakable as a band who have the knowledge and the will to be successful.

This was no exception. All the force within Everyone Is Frozen and Learn To Love The System was there, instigating that feeling in the crowd that anything is possible, on a ride of soaring guitar and driving bass backed by heartbeat drums and poignant, important lyrics.

Of course, One More Minute was blasted out as up-tempo and blood racing as ever, but it wasn’t alone. The set was packed with the anthems, with Follow Me Down, One More Minute’s b-side, that stood out as a real highlight; instantly creating that change in mood that Omerta excel in, that subtle, dramatic shift in atmosphere

As well as the known songs, Omerta’s aim at this gig was to air some of their forthcoming tunes. Perhaps even a little more serious and dark than their current stuff, these new songs should grab the attention of fans and non-fans alike.

There was a slight weakness in their performance of those newies, but you could easily put this down to the familiarity of the surrounding material, and Omerta, being who they are, will grow into them in no time.

There’s no doubt that it’s time for Omerta to receive all of the recognition they deserve. What was obvious here has always been obvious; that they mean it and they deserve it. It’s a pleasure to see them back.
