Tim Finn at the Lowry

Sara Newman (gig: 19/03/07)
The winds of ideas and dreams of Tim Finn’s Imaginary Kingdom blew into town from the Southern hemisphere for the final night of his UK tour.

Following a resurgence of the Finn brothers (Neil sends his love) and a recent Split Enz tour of Australia, Six Months In A Leaky Boat was a fitting start, just a heartbeat after Tim appeared on stage, with a strike of a chord and a flash of light.

The magic began for Tim in New Zealand in the ‘70s and ‘80s with Split Enz and Crowded House and continues today with the gifted singer songwriter whipping up a storm in the intimate surroundings.

With his wizardry white hair and energy, Tim took to the helm with rhythmic acoustic melodies and intense numbers that spoke directly to the audience who replied with heads nodding, fingers tapping, whoops and requests.

Tim’s latest album Imaginary Kingdom understandably featured heavily throughout the evening. We learn that the resonating feeling of Unsinkable was inspired by his eight year old son Harper, while a melodic Astounding Moon is dedicated to "all the romantics here tonight, including me who stares at the moon waiting for God knows what."

From his epic back catalogue, there were Split Enz classics, such as a yearning Poor Boy and a splashing, frantic Shark Attack smattered through the acoustic and piano rich set.

Crowded House fans were not left disappointed either. Chocolate Cake was a teasing conclusion that preceded a couple of extra helpings, which finally closed with a standing ovation for It’s Only Natural. It was a deserved end for a thrilling performer.
