Thirteen Senses at Academy 3

Paul Benham (gig: 18/03/07)
It was somewhat of a comeback for the four-piece from Cornwall, having last visited The Academy over two years ago, and it seems in their time away, they’ve done little to get out of their rut.

There was no escaping it; there was a distinctly more experienced look to the crowd than you’d usually expect to see in Academy 3, which did nothing to dispel the increasingly sticky labels of Mum Rock.

The band took to the stage to an impressive light show and the mood was well and truly set, as they erupted into the title track from their new album, Contact.

Sadly, that was about as good as it got. It soon became apparent that this was not a gig which would blow anyone away. Each song morphed into another with limited excitement and wasn't helped by the style of irreverence portrayed by front man Will South.

They teased with occasional gems such as All The Love In Your Hands and old favourites like Through The Glass and Into The Fire, but everything else failed to make the grade. Soon, the crowd drifted off into conversation with friends.

Perhaps you're not meant to be blown away by bands like these but that said, Idlewild managed to thrill the Academy last week. Let’s be honest about this; when Thirteen Senses were good, they were great, but when they were bad, they were Snow Patrol.
