You would think that all the attention he has received over the past six months would have gone to the 22-year-old’s head but no; he is, for now, the same passionate yet humble musician who only a year ago was supporting Corrine Bailey Rae. | | James Morrison (pic: Shirlaine Forrest) |
The same set list is performed as last time he was in town but this doesn’t matter to the crowd, as his performance is stronger and more passionate and his confidence on stage seems to have grown so quickly, it is hard to believe he is still so young. As he works his way through the songs, it feels like he has put a spell on the Apollo, as the audience gaze on mesmerised by his soulful voice. At points it is just James, a guitar and a harmonica and these moments, in particular, are spine-tingling. He seems to have learnt quickly which buttons to press to get a crowd on-side, even recognising a lot of men in the audience might have been dragged there by their partners. As the set finishes, there’s a standing ovation from the circle and plenty of clapping and screaming from the crowd in the pit. Let’s just hope James keeps the charm and humble qualities that have managed to get this crowd wrapped around his little finger and that all this attention doesn’t go to his head, resulting in him being added to the list of young talented musicians spoilt by the industry. |
