Just the sight of them causes intrigue galore. You’re instantly curious to hear what sound is projected from four people who are so different visually, especially with a female vocalist that has the blokes in the audience drooling into their pints. The obvious comparisons - Blondie, Sleeper and the rest – sweep across your mind, but if you’re expecting eyelash fluttering and sickly sweet vocals, think again! The crowd builds up nicely as vocalist Caroline Sterling saunters into the first song, addressing the assembled with her uber-cool aura and smoky eyes, her voice soft yet assertive enough to compliment the rest of the band. The sound is strict, sharp and laced with fierce blasts of guitar, which melts as the vocals are poured over it. That said, while the songs have a certain power, you want Caroline to push herself forward a bit more and do a bit of the old posing and strutting – she’s certainly got it so why shouldn’t she flaunt it! Finishing with the most established song of the set – Bootgrip - it was, all in all, a great gig, despite the presence, yet again, of the reoccurring Roadhouse sound problems, which are becoming something of a tradition at the venue, with the vocals not having the deserved volume and levels going a bit haywire. I’ve a feeling that big things are ahead for this band and it’s only a matter of time before the rest of world takes notice. |
