After an intentionally irritating comedy act, Tenacious D's set was revealed. A front room, with a sofa, fridge and front door appeared, whilst Jack Black and best buddy Kyle Gass poked their little heads out of the top of the duvet cover. With much laughter from the crowd, the play and the music begins, only for Jack to have a falling out with Kyle. Left alone on stage, the lights focused on Mr Black for an emotional rendition of Dude, including the refrain of “I totally miss you!” Sure enough, Kyle returned, giving Jack the chance to spring a surprise on him in the form of a guitar made from a toilet seat! As Kyle was determined not to play such an object, Jack tried to plug it in, and was dramatically electrocuted and the stage. Cue a set change, with the stage turning into a cinema, while the D had died - and gone to hell! Whilst in Satan’s lair, the D met Anti-Christ on electric guitar and Charlie Chapman on bass - sent to hell because he was gay - who were looking to join a band. So a fully rocking Tenacious D was born to supply even more songs from new album, The Pick Of Destiny. As red lights shone on the hellish effects, the props came to prominence, making a big difference to the atmosphere. Dancing mushrooms, plastic cars and a huge metal man were just a few of the sights on offer, sights that left the entire audience open-mouthed in amazement at how ridiculously original this performance was. Jack and Kyle eventually met the Devil, hold a rock competition with him and win the right to let return to earth, thanks to their over-enthusiastic chords and chaos. I could go on forever, because there wasn't one point in which I felt bored. Jack Black is unbelievable and is absolutely hilarious, the masses laughing and rocking in equal proportions all the way through. Whether or not the records are up to scratch doesn’t really matter. Live, Tenacious D are the best band I have ever seen. |
