Katherine Jenkins at the Bridgewater Hall

Stephen Garner (gig: 30/11/06)
Thunderous applause welcomed Katherine Jenkins on stage at the Bridgewater, and her enchanting voice, dazzling dresses and captivating stage presence made this a very enjoyable evening that will live long in the memory of those present.

Katherine Jenkins

Performing a string of classics and ably assisted by the National Symphony Orchestra, the Welsh soprano was both vocally and visually stunning.

She commenced proceedings with the uplifting Granada and soon after delivered the classic and concert favourite, O Mio Babbino Caro. Chatting with the audience, she explained how she likes to interpret pop songs in a classical way, her version of I Will Always Love You acting as a perfect illustration, and also providing one of the many highlights of the evening.

Other impressive moments included Nella Fantasia, Amazing Grace and Time To Say Goodbye, which closed the first set. The second half exploded into life, paying homage to Carmen, with the orchestra conducted by Anthony Inglis delivering the magnificent Bizet score with great aplomb. They were soon joined by Katherine Jenkins in an exquisite red dress to perform selected songs, including the delightful Habanera.

Just as Pavarotti and Te Kanawa have done before her, Jenkins is bringing classical music to the masses in her own irresistible way. She is charming, elegant, and graceful and yet, at the same time, exudes a ‘girl next door’ quality which leaves you feeling that not only are you in the presence of greatness, but also that of a very warm and delightful human being who seems unaware of her own talent.

She ended the concert with We’ll Meet Again and, as she received a well deserved standing ovation, I was hoping that we would.
