Is anything ever straightforward in the music business these days? We all know the internet can be a double-edged sword where music is concerned. For every Alex Turner that gets a deserved break, there’s a Sandi Thom ready to pounce. But for bands like Shiny Toy Guns, the Night & Day wouldn’t even be half full without online help. And sadly, that’s all it is; half full. This is a band that will not let such things dictate how they perform. This is an arena-scale performance, and the Night and Day just can’t keep pace, resulting in the occasional sound issue. But this is akin to stating the Bayeux Tapestry is fraying a little. Much like their light show, the music is in glorious technicolour, almost every song exploding into the perfect hook. It is an utter testament to the band that in a single set, they can move from the escalating, synth-driven Rocketship, which could convert a Ministry of Sound disciple in a heartbeat, to closing with a cover of Depeche Mode’s Stripped so brooding and dripping with atmospherics, Dave Gahan would be eyeing up retirement homes. The band have such a huge arsenal of breathtaking material, and deliver it with a passion and sheer power large enough to silence any critic of electronica based music, you have to believe that it truly is just a matter of time for them. Quite simply, Shiny Toy Guns play your favourite songs. You just haven’t heard them yet. Don’t you think it’s time you did? |
