The Feeling at the Academy

Helen McGrath (gig: 15/11/06)
It has been five months since I last went to see a gig from these guys. Count ‘em, five. I knew they were good live; catchy tunes and soft pop’n’roll from the nice boys of music, but would it be too soon to still enjoy it?

They are certainly consistent, with the same set list and the same banter. But rather than get a bit bored by the same old, I felt myself swept up in the singing, dancing atmosphere.

Yes, they are one of the more ‘nice’ bands to appear on the Academy, but they bring enough cracking guitar in at the right time to still remain a bit rock. But underneath it all, they are essentially pop and don’t deny it.

Self-billed as 'great big no-nonsense, hook-filled, pop music', they’re not lying. You could never imagine them having a musical square-off with Razorlight, a la Oasis and Blur, but would the opportunity ever come up anyway as they happily just bob along.

Entering to a very harmonious Fill My Little World, they strummed an infectious enthusiasm which speedily resonated into the crowd. The album Twelve Stops… has seen hit after hit on every radio station around, but there was more than that on offer. Video Killed the Radio Star met a surprising realization that most of the crowd knew every word; an ingenious cover, perfectly delivered.

The Feeling, good work, but you need to keep it up and give us some more new material. If I see you again in another five months, I would like to be surprised. Don’t let us get bored of you – I think you’re on a roll.
