Muse at the Arena

Paul Benham (gig: 10/11/06)
Mental fans? Check. Awesome set? Check. One hell of a show? I wouldn't bet against it. The Arena's great spectacle, with its steep seating, creating an amphitheatre effect with the band playing the gladiators, there to entertain and educate.

The stage was fantastic in every sense of the word. It looked like a carnival-goer’s wet dream, with a vast array of lights and the drummer encased in an illuminated cage for the entire performance. Everything looked fantastic and set pulses pumping from the get go.

Then came Matt with a guitar that lit up the stage that little bit more and erupted into Knights Of Cydonia, which began a tirade of musical prowess which may have gone on for two hours, but felt like two minutes. I'm gonna put something out there - Muse are the best live band on the planet right now!

There, I've said it and I stand by it, because I don't believe there to be a band out there who can match there intensity and talent. Matt plays a modern day Mozart and conducts his pals effortlessly through a set which involves many fantastic tunes (minus Muscle Museum - can you tell I'm bitter?) and puts a smile on the face of every muso in the crowd.

Songs like Hysteria and Citizen Erased reverberate around the Arena but it’s their eclectic back catalogue which ensures that the two hours passes like a summer holiday when you were young. There's even time to let loose some giant balloons full of ticker tape onto the crowd which I for one can say I touched!

They end on Take a Bow, a fitting end to a great show, with Matt launching his guitar into the mosh pit. These lads have shown once again that true class shows through. My Chemical Romance - my arse!
