This tongue-in-chic playfulness extends to the music allied to kooky kids’ lyricism celebrating the banal and ridiculous: a brand of electronica which provides some catchy highlights from current album The Warning. However, their work also includes a significant amount of less than average tunes. Gig-wise, this meant that the evening was strung out with some pretty run of the mill fodder, the new tracks in particular failing to match the brilliance of Over and Over. Not that any of this seemed to matter to the audience who were so fervently up for it that Teletubbies playing Chas n Dave’s back catalogue would have been welcomed with whoops of joy. Just as well, as the atmosphere kept the energy buoyant whilst we waited for the tunes that have made Hot Chip radio play-list material. When they came though, they united the audience into a throbbing mass of pumping arms and smiling faces: Boy from School, Colours and No Fit State predictably stood out amongst other looser material. The final track of the encore realised the potential the band has to create perfection. It all came together with Over and Over to a background lightshow that had been disappointingly absent from the rest of the proceedings. If the Hot Chips manage to deliver more like this, they are surely on course for bigger venues and bigger bank balances. Let’s hope they pin down some more tunes to get them there. |
