The Goo Goo Dolls at the ApolloCiaran Gilligan (gig: 30/09/06) The trouble with The Goo Goo Dolls is, they just ain't what they used to be.

| | Beginning life in the mid 80's as a raw and fiesty punk outfit, it's a strange thing to realise that they now owe as much of their career to Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan as they once did to The Replacements and The Clash. It's also a sad fact that, since the excellent mainstream double whammy of 1995's A Boy Named Goo and 1998's Dizzy Up The Girl, the output of the Goos has steadily declined in quality, and tonight it feels as if they must have gone from solid, well crafted songs of note to bland, radio friendly pop dirges in an instant. The annoying thing is, during tonight’s performance, there are several moments of sheer brilliance that show if they went back to their roots and forgot about being a bunch of commercial friendly pretty boys, they might still have something special. Their current career path sadly looks too safe for that to be a viable option though, which is a real shame. | | | last updated: 06/10/06 | SEE ALSO
