Nevermind. If it means that a few hundred more people become part of The Licks Experience, then it may be worth the sacrifice. Armed with two pints of cider and black, I squished my way along the back wall to the grinding rock n roll of Dublin's Humanzi. These chaps have been playing hard over the past year, from their first gig supporting Hard-Fi to darting across the UK with the likes of Dirty Pretty Things, and theirs is no-nonsense static rock that should please any fan of the aforementioned. Hands free and head fizzing, grinning along to Iggy Pop's Nightclubbing, the mighty Licks swan onto the stage, strike up a chord and set the room alight. Here she comes now…Yankee Doodle Dandy, "Are you ready for a rock and roll show?" From every lung bursts forth resounding confirmation. Three songs in and eager new single Hot Kiss tears the roof open. And she's off, lolloping around the stage like a Squaw on Acid, pouting and hair-throwing, ripping into three minute stoner pop numbers like there's no tomorrow. Even the frequently perplexing sound mix doesn't prevent tonight from being a live-wired extravaganza of tongue-in-cheek strut-alongs. One day, it will be illegal for bands to 'upgrade' gig venues. On that day, I'll stop finding things to pick at. |
