The Second Floor at Big Hands

Stu Gibson (gig: 28/09/06)
Seeking a refuge of sorts from the Juliette Lewis gig, we arrived at Big Hands in time to delve into the drones and dry ice of The Second Floor.

Fuelled with the restless, wistful insistence of early Spacemen 3’s narco nightmare nirvana, all twisted and shook up over the world and girls like The Mary Chain’s Reid Brothers, they sidestep a certain lack of personality with a dense tension that, from under noxious North-West horizons, elevates them above the trust-fund shoe-gazers of yore.

Such comparisons are easy to make and have been made many a time but, crucially, they stand up to them unlike, say, The Morning After Girls.

With more than enough dry ice to host a Fields of the Nephilim gig, it could have been The Warlocks up there on the tiny stage. Though anyone that comes along with the very real promise of giving a sonic boom to send BRMC back to the Bay Area should be made more than welcome.
